A brief run-down of my two picks for Golden Valley City Council.
1) Gillian Rosenquist. Gillian interned at the ACLU and has been involved in social justice issues throughout her life. She worked at LegalCorps, which serves low income people and new American immigrants, and has a law degree which I think will be immensely useful to the Council (no lawyers on it at present). She leans green and maintains her yard chem-free – yes I asked her! She has also worked on the city commissions; she's currently Vice Chair of Open Space & Recreation Commission, and worked on Light Rail. She knows how to get things done in the City government. Her work style is deeply thoughtful, considered, fair and mature (these are things I value in our current political climate). I'm choosing her over Jim Ryan (the other DFL-endorsed candidate) because I think she has more awareness of diversity issues and a broader perspective that will serve all Golden Valley residents. She also lived in Seattle for a while, a...
The first step in building better Democrats is getting in the habit of voting city elections! These council member, park board members, school board etc. have a TON of practical power in decisions that will effect the city for years to come.
On November 7, 2017 Minneapolis will elect a mayor, 13 seats on the city council, members of the board of estimate and taxation, and 9 members of the park & recreation board.
Once you have your info, here's a handy guide! The candidate with the most endorsements is listed first in each section. NOTE: Races that have GOP challengers have those challengers in red. It's especially important to vote unified in those elections (go with the candidate with the DFL and other endorsements). In the City Council races, those with GOP contenders are Ward 6, 7 and 10. In the Park Board races, those races are Park Board At Large (two GOP-endorsed candidates) and District 6....
"The GOP began its takeover of this country at the school board level"
– A wise activist I met once
We're all anxiously awaiting 2018 and the chance to change the course of this Titanic, but one thing we MUST get in the habit of is participating in the local elections as well as the biggies. In fact, local elections matter more than ever because local government can protect against 45's agenda. We saw this with our City Council members who amended policing policy. These local city council and school board members have a lot of power, and many years ago the GOP realized that, and started to gain inroads. We must do the same!
Drum-roll please! Our recommendations for Golden Valley!
City Council:Progressive We Stand happily endorses Gillian Rosenquist and Larry Fonnest.
Gillian Rosenquist is smart, down-to-earth, and has served on the open space & recreation commission for Golden Valley. She is trained as an attorney, which will be an asset to the council, and has a track record of effective...
